TRADITION CAN WAIT WHILE THE LAW PROTECTS

The laws of Ghana allow or qualify a child to take part in public or national issues when he or she is at least at the age of 18, this is because it is believed that the child is matured enough at least  to make certain decisions for him or herself. A child deserves his or her rightful inheritance to be handed over to him or her by the age of 18 but it’s advisable to allow the child to be matured enough. Until then there are legal ways to protect both the child and the asset.

A thirteen year old JHS student, Barimah Kwadwo Bonsu has been made king in Pakyi no.1 a town in the Ashanti Region under the Otomfuo’s instruction. The young innocent ignorant boy schools at Salvation Army in patasi another suburb in the Ashanti region. Nana Yaa Asantewa Bonsu the mother of this young king who happens to be the mother as well, said she was instructed by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to enstool him because his age doesn’t conflict with their local tradition without considering any other factor. It’s beyond doubt this woman’s respect for tradition and the Ashanti kingdom without considering her child’s age, capability in decision making and will to be the king. Ghanaians must understand the essence of law while tradition could hold for the right moment.
